Trolling for Wahoo in the Bahamas
Written By: Captain Kody Michael
There’s nothing quite like waking up before dawn, knowing that an epic fishing adventure awaits. The anticipation, the preparation, and the excitement of what’s to come make those early mornings worth every second. This time, we had our sights set on something truly special—an uncharted Wahoo fishing trip in a new area of the Bahamas.
The Journey Begins
The day before our big fishing trip, we left Florida and made our way to Bimini, where we checked in and prepped for the next day’s adventure. The Bahamas has always been one of our favorite destinations for offshore fishing, but this specific area was a mystery to us. While we had trolled for Wahoo in different parts of the Bahamas before, this location was completely untested, and that made the trip even more exciting.
At first light, we wasted no time. The rods were rigged, the bait was set, and as the sun began to rise over the horizon, we started trolling for Wahoo. The conditions were looking prime, and with only one other boat in the area, we felt like we had stumbled upon a hidden gem.
Wahoo Fishing Madness: Fast and Furious Action
The bite was on! By 9 AM, we had already landed five solid Wahoo fish. The action was fast-paced, the drag was screaming, and the adrenaline rush was unreal. There’s something about the power and speed of a Wahoo that makes every catch an unforgettable experience. These fish are known for their blistering runs, and each fight kept us on our toes.
Just as we were riding high on our success, the unexpected happened—our depth finder went out. When you’re over 100 miles offshore, losing a critical piece of equipment like that is far from ideal. Without it, finding the perfect depths and structure for Wahoo fishing became a challenge. But when things go wrong, you adapt. That’s what fishing is all about.
Adjusting the Game Plan
With no working depth finder, we decided to rely on instinct, experience, and sheer determination. We continued trolling, hoping to entice more Wahoo bites, but instead, we hooked into a nice-sized Kingfish and, to our surprise, the biggest Barracuda we’ve ever caught. It wasn’t what we were targeting, but in the world of fishing, you learn to appreciate every unexpected catch.
As the day progressed, the weather began to shift. The winds picked up, and we knew we had a small window to make it back safely. By early afternoon, we made the call to start heading back toward Florida before the seas got too rough.
One Last Stop: Deep Dropping Success
Even though our main mission was Wahoo fishing, we couldn’t resist making one last stop at some deep-dropping spots we had marked on previous trips. And luck was on our side! We landed nearly a dozen Yellow-Eyed Snapper and a solid Amberjack before finally heading home.
A Trolling Adventure to Remember
No fishing trip is without its challenges, but that’s what makes them so memorable. Losing our depth finder tested our ability to adapt, but we still managed to have an incredible day on the water. From landing five Wahoo in record time to pulling in unexpected catches and exploring new fishing grounds, this was an adventure we won’t soon forget.
We’re already looking forward to our next trip, and you can bet we’ll be back to this area to do some more Wahoo fishing. If you love the thrill of offshore fishing and want to follow along on more epic adventures, be sure to subscribe to our channel!
