I created this page to give you some insight into different aspects of fishing that I think are important to consider when you’re looking to book a fishing charter in Key West.

At the end of this article I’ve included my top 10 recommendations for fishing charters in Key West. Of course, I had to include my own, First Light Charters, because well.. why not!

Types of Fishing Charters

When booking a fishing charter in Key West, it’s important to understand that there are different types of trips to choose from. Options typically include offshore fishing charters, which venture offshore to target larger game fish such as Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo, and Tuna.

Alternatively, fishing the reef is generally closer to shore and is perfect for catching species like Snapper, Amberjack, and Grouper.

Finally, fishing the flats is yet another exciting experience that sets Key West apart as a top fishing destination. The shallow waters of the flats are full with life, providing anglers the chance to catch species like Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon. These fish are known for their challenging fights and acrobatic displays, making them highly sought after by anglers.  

Each type of charter offers unique experiences, so consider what aligns best with your interests and goals.

Target Species in Key West

One of the primary factors you should consider when booking a charter is the type of fish you want to catch. Key West is known for its diverse marine life, making it an ideal destination for those who love to fish. Depending on the season, you can expect to catch various species, including Yellowtail Snapper, Mahi-Mahi, Grouper, Tarpon, Swordfish, Tuna, Wahoo, and more.

Certain species peak at specific times of the year, so it’s beneficial to inquire about seasonal availability to ensure you get the most out of your fishing experience. Utilizing resources like the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) can help you stay informed about when specific fish species are in season.

Best Time to Fish in Key West

The best time to fish in Key West varies by species and the type of fish you are interested in targeting. Generally, the best time to fish is between January and May. Personally, this is MY favorite time to fish.

During this time, anglers have the opportunity to target a diverse range of species, with temperatures ideally suited for fishing. By understanding these seasonal patterns, you can effectively plan your trip to maximize your chances of a successful catch.

Duration and Pricing

Fishing charters in Key West typically offer various trip durations, ranging from half-day, to 3/4 day, to full-day excursions. Half-day trips are typically around four hours, 3/4 day charters are typically 6 hours long, while full-day charters can last eight hours or more.

Pricing varies based on the duration, type of charter, and the number of participants. However, the average offshore charter typically begins at $1000 plus tip. Keep in mind that Key West is one of the most expensive places to fish in Florida. If you were to book a charter further north, you are likely going to pay several hundred dollars less.

What’s Included?

When booking a fishing charter, it’s important to know what is included in the package. Almost all charters provide water, fishing gear (rods and tackle), and licenses. While most charters include bait, some captain will require you to pay an additional fee (approximately $40-$50) for live bait. Understanding these inclusions can help you pack appropriately and avoid unexpected expenses.

Amenities

Lastly, consider the amenities available on the charter. Depending on the boat, some fishing charters in Key West are equipped with restrooms, shaded areas, and comfortable seating. Depending on the duration of your trip, these amenities can make a significant difference in comfort, especially on warm days. What to Bring?

 When preparing for a day at the sandbar, we encourage you to bring along sunscreen with a high SPF. Additionally, don’t forget to pack a hat, sunglasses, and a towel for drying off afterward. To stay energized and hydrated throughout the day, bring along food/snacks and any additional beverages you may want to have. You’re welcome to bring alcohol, but please avoid glass bottles for everyone’s safety while on board. By packing these essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for a fantastic day on the water.
